Cowbridge has some lovely homes, and a fair few of them need a bit more thought than a standard new-build when it comes to cleaning the carpets. This guide covers what is worth knowing before you book anyone, whether that is us or another local cleaner, so you know what a proper job looks like and what it should cost.
Clean rooms in Cowbridge, one room at a time
You don't need to book the whole house. Most people in Cowbridge start with the room that bothers them most, usually the living room or the stairs, and add others when it suits. Every room is priced on its own, so you can see what you'll pay before you get in touch:
- Living room: £60. The room that takes the most wear, with traffic lanes by the sofa and door.
- Bedrooms and dining rooms: £45 each.
- Small rooms and home offices: £30.
- Hallway or stairs: £30 each, landing £20. Often the dirtiest carpet in the house, because everyone walks the same line.
A single room usually takes us under an hour, so a clean room is very doable on a weekday evening.
Older homes and cottages need a gentler hand
Plenty of houses in Cowbridge and Llanblethian are older properties: stone cottages, Georgian and Victorian townhouses off the high street, and period homes tucked down the lanes. They often have good quality wool or wool-mix carpets, sometimes fitted years ago and still going strong.
Wool is a brilliant fibre. It is hard-wearing and hides dirt well, but it does not like being treated roughly. Too much heat, strong chemicals or soaking the carpet can cause shrinkage, colour run or browning. A cleaner working on wool should be using a wool-safe pre-spray, keeping the water temperature sensible and making sure they extract as much moisture as possible. If you are not sure what your carpet is made of, say so when you ask for a quote. A good cleaner will check before starting rather than guess.
Narrow stairs and tight access
Older homes tend to have narrow, steep or winding staircases. Stairs are usually done by hand with an upholstery or stair tool rather than a full-size wand, and each tread and riser needs its own attention. It takes longer than people expect, so it is worth asking how the stairs will be tackled rather than assuming they are included in a room price.
Parking on the high street and the lanes
Cowbridge high street is busy, and some of the lanes around Llanblethian are narrow with very little room to stop. Portable cleaning machines need to be carried in and hoses run to the property, so it helps to tell your cleaner in advance where they can park and how far it is to your front door. If you have a driveway, keeping it clear on the day makes life much easier for everyone.
How to choose a carpet cleaner
Whoever you book, these are the things worth checking:
- Insurance. They should have public liability insurance and be happy to confirm it.
- DBS checked. You are letting someone into your home, sometimes while you are at work. A DBS check gives you peace of mind.
- Clear prices up front. You should know roughly what you will pay before anyone arrives. Be wary of very low headline prices that grow once the machine is in the hallway.
- The method. Ask how they clean. You want to hear about pre-treatment, agitation and hot water extraction, not just a quick pass with a machine.
- Honesty about stains. Nobody can promise every stain will come out. A cleaner who tells you that is being straight with you.
What a proper clean involves
A thorough hot water extraction clean follows roughly the same steps every time:
- Vacuum. Dry soil and grit come out first. Cleaning over loose dirt just turns it into mud.
- Pre-spray. A cleaning solution suited to the fibre is applied to loosen grease and grime.
- Dwell time. The pre-spray is left for a few minutes to do its work.
- Agitation. The pile is worked with a brush or groomer so the solution gets right down to the base of the fibres.
- Hot water rinse and extraction. Clean water is rinsed through the carpet and sucked straight back out, taking the loosened dirt with it.
- Groom. The pile is brushed in one direction so it dries evenly and looks neat.
Stains are treated as part of the process, with spot treatments chosen for whatever the stain is.
How long will my carpet take to dry?
Usually somewhere between 4 and 8 hours, depending on the carpet, the weather and how much airflow the room gets. Older stone houses can be a little cooler and slower to dry, so a few simple things help:
- open a window if you can, or leave the heating on low
- keep shoes and pets off until it is dry
- put furniture back with foil or plastic tabs under the feet if the carpet is still damp
- give it a light vacuum once it is fully dry to lift the pile
When is the best time to book?
- Before winter. You will spend more time indoors, and a clean carpet before the heating goes on and visitors arrive makes a real difference.
- After the muddy months. Spring is a good time to get rid of everything walked in over a wet Welsh winter, especially if you have dogs or walk the fields around town.
- Before selling or moving. Clean carpets photograph better and help a house feel cared for at viewings. If you are moving out of a rental, a clean helps at check-out too.
